FAQ
Frequently Asked
What is bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a type of mood disease characterized by dramatic fluctuations in mood, energy, and behavior. Bipolar disorder can be identified by alternating episodes of mania (very elevated mood) and depression (severe sadness). These episodes might last anywhere from a few hours to several months. The mood swings are strong enough to impair the individual’s capacity to function. Mania can be a terrifying feeling that leads to reckless behavior with major consequences for the individual and their family. A depressive episode makes functioning in one’s daily life difficult or impossible.
How prevalent is bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder affects 3 to 5% of the adult population and is equally common in men and women.
Who has a risk factor for acquiring bipolar disorder?
You are significantly more likely to get bipolar disorder if you have a family member who has it.
At the moment, schizophrenia is diagnosed by the presence of symptoms or their precursors for six months. Two or more symptoms must be substantial and remain for at least one month, such as hallucinations, delusions, incoherent speech, and extremely disorganized or catatonic behavior. If the delusions are strange enough, or if hallucinations consist of a voice constantly commenting on the person’s behavior/thoughts, or two or more voices “conversing,” only one symptom is required for diagnosis. During the six-month term, social or vocational issues may also be included in the diagnosis.
What are the risk factors/triggers for bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder has no single proven cause, but research suggests that the condition is due to abnormalities in the way some nerve cells in the brain function or communicate. The disorder makes people more vulnerable to emotional and physical stress. As a result, stresses, such as upsetting experiences, substance use or lack of sleep, can trigger episodes, even though they do not cause the disorder.
What are the risk factors/triggers for bipolar disorder?
Although there is no specific confirmed cause of bipolar disorder, research suggests that the condition is caused by variations in the way specific nerve cells in the brain operate or communicate. People with the disease are more vulnerable to emotional and physical stress. As a result, stressful circumstances, substance abuse, or a lack of sleep can trigger episodes even if they do not cause the illness.
