FAQ
Frequently Asked
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR SCHIZOPHRENIA?
A variety of factors contribute to the likelihood of developing schizophrenia.
- Genetics
- Environment
- The chemistry of the brain
- The structure of the brain
- Growth of the brain
Many different genes, according to scientists, may enhance the chance of schizophrenia development, but no single gene causes the condition on its own. It is not yet possible to predict who may develop schizophrenia using genetic information. Scientists also believe that interactions between genes and environmental factors are required for schizophrenia to develop.Bipolar disorder is a treatable medical disease.
WHAT ARE THE SUBTYPES OF SCHIZOPHRENIA?
Men and women are equally affected by schizophrenia. It occurs at comparable frequencies in all ethnic groups worldwide. Symptoms including hallucinations and delusions commonly appear between the ages of 16 and 30.
HOW IS SCHIZOPHRENIA DIAGNOSED AND TREATED?
A combination of characteristics can predict schizophrenia in up to 80% of young people who are at high risk of acquiring the disorder. These indicators include social isolation and withdrawal, an increase in strange ideas and suspicions, and a family history of psychosis. This is known as the “prodromal” period among young people who develop the condition.
At the moment, schizophrenia is diagnosed by the presence of symptoms or their precursors for six months. Two or more symptoms must be substantial and remain for at least one month, such as hallucinations, delusions, incoherent speech, and extremely disorganized or catatonic behavior. If the delusions are strange enough, or if hallucinations consist of a voice constantly commenting on the person’s behavior/thoughts, or two or more voices “conversing,” only one symptom is required for diagnosis. During the six-month term, social or vocational issues may also be included in the diagnosis.
AT WHAT AGE DO THE SYMPTOMS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA APPEAR?
